Learn the Method (Steps 1-3)
Step 1 - The Thorn
The BBB+ Advocacy Method begins by identifying a repeating issue or misunderstanding about music learning, what we call a thorn. Thorns often appear in comments from students, teachers, or parents that undervalue music learning or the work you do. They sting because they reveal a belief that keeps resurfacing across your community.
Step 2 - The Stem
Each thorn grows from a deeper belief, the stem. This belief might come from peer influence, a teacher’s past experiences with music, or a parent’s concern about music as a viable career. To understand the stem, ask a simple, genuine question that encourages the person to explain the reasoning behind their comment.
Step 3 - The Fuel
Step 3 explores the fuel, the external messages shaping those beliefs. By uncovering the sources that feed the stem, you can choose the most effective advocacy tools to shift thinking, strengthen understanding of music learning, and highlight the real value of your work.
